For many parents of children in hospital, anything that can be done to bring a sense of normality and joy to their child’s day is worth it. And for some children, that means fresh air and play in our specialist rooftop play area at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
For more than 14 years it has helped families special memories in hospital – often turning what can be a traumatic and scary time into one full of smiles and joy.
But 14 years and thousands of hours of use mean the once shiny, new play area has become worn and in need of some TLC. So with your help we can transform it into the modern area our young patients deserve.

The rooftop play area at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital is such a popular area. This much-loved facility enables young patients – many of whom may be staying at the hospital for weeks, months or years – to have some fresh air, time to play and enjoy a welcome break outside. This space enables them the freedom to be children again, while still being in a safe environment where care professionals are on hand.
